One of the things that wedding photography has in common with sports photography is that the best photos are often not of the action… but of the reaction.
.
Sure, you want to get the photo of the winning touchdown but the emotion you’ll get from the team on the bench at that moment are amazing. And you certainly want to capture the first dance at a wedding... but the look on the faces of the parents at that moment can be just as moving if not more.
.
The same thing goes for travel/nature/adventure photography. Always look around for what else is happening while everyone’s attention is on “the main action.”

I was heading west after leaving a cloudy sunrise at Great Sand Dunes National Park when I looked in the review mirror and saw the sun starting to peak through the clouds. I pulled over immediately to take this photo.

I stayed at Sky View RV Park just west of Albuquerque, NM and got up early to get at time-lapse sequence of the sunrise when I turned around to see the nearly full moon setting in the west. (Sorry for the grain on this one, I didn’t have another tripod handy so I had to crank the ISO to shoot this hand-held.)

As the sun set over Valley of the Gods in southern Utah, it cast amazing light over the buttes and rolling landscape to the southeast of where I was camped.

I stayed on BLM land south of Moab, UT one night. As sun set, it cast a beautiful pink glow on snow covered Mt. Waas and Mt. Tukunikivatz in the east.

And at Canyonlands, National park “THE” place to be at sunrise is said to be Mesa Arch. I arrived about 45 minutes before sunrise and there were already half a dozen photographers staking out their positions at the arch. By the time the sun crested the mountains in the east, there must have been at least 50 tourists and photographers all jockeying for a position to get a clear photo… but just 50 or so yards to the south, I found a excellent spot to capture the sunrise in a way that not one other person was photographing.
